BIPOLAR EFFECT by YERIN

 

 

우리는 어쩌면 모순이 가득한 세상에서 살아가고 있다. 사회가 정해 놓은 잣대와 다수의 기준이 절대적 기준이 되기도 하며, 완벽하지 않은 것을 지적한다. 우리 중 그 어떤 누구도 완벽하지 않음에도 불구하고, 어떠한 일에 있어 남의 눈치를 보며 나의 생각을, 의사를 감추기도 한다. 그러나 모두 자신만의 불평불만, 말할 수 없는 비밀을 가지고 살아간다.

 

작가는 유독 외형적 잣대에 관한 판단으로 오해를 사는 경우가 많았다. 그러나 그런 오해가 발생한다 해서 ‘나’라는 존재가 변화할 수는 없기에, 또 다른 자아를 만들어 나를 보여주고자 했다. 그렇게 “보보”라는 캐릭터가 탄생했다. 작가는 보보를 통해 내가 느끼는 ‘불편함’ 과 나의 진실된 ‘취향’을 다루고자 하였으며, 작가가 직접 겪어온 사회적 오해의 순간과 영감을 주는 것들에 대한 아낌없는 감정의 표현, 이를 통해 나는 어떤 존재인가를 표현하고자 한다.  

 

 프랑스의 사진작가 기부르댕(Guy Bourdin)의 대중성 및 패셔너블함과 동시에 렌항(Ren Hang)의 적당한 불편함을 사랑하며 레트로한 무드를 좋아하면서도, 퓨처리스틱한 시티팝을 좋아하는 이중적 성향을 가진 나를 인정하고, 작가만의 방식으로 투영한 세상을 펼쳐 보인다. 그리고 작가가 펼치는 다양한 이미지들을 관객은 아낌없이 자신만의 방식으로 해석하면 된다. 그 어떤 것도 완벽하게 정의될 수는 없고, 사소한 것이라 하여 무게가 없는 것은 아니니 말이다.

 

 

We live in a world that is woven with paradoxes. Majorities in our society set a paradigm for sorting out a paragon, and a slight imperfection becomes a flaw. While none of us is perfect, people walk on eggshells and change their beliefs just to fit in. We all live with dissatisfaction sealed in silence.

 

Yerin is quite used to the other’s judgements on her appearance. Instead of changing herself and being disoriented to meet the expectations of others, the artist uses Beau Beau. The neo-pop artist achieves a gripping narrative through Beau Beau that represents her unwavering taste as well as a panegyric on the sources of inspiration.

 

The artist's works reflect her sprawling love of retrofuturism in Citipop, French photographer Guy Bourdin's fashionable mass appeal and the decent throbbing sense of Ren Hang. Yerin hopes audiences will play an active role in construing the message within the artworks, as nothing can be defined in an absolute way.
