Broke Boys by Ashin Kim

평화롭던 파리의 거리에 총성과 폭음이 울려퍼지던 2015년, 소년은 환멸에 가까운 분노와 복합적인 감정이 뒤섞인 갈등을 경험하며, 이를 담아내고 기록하는 작가가 되기로 결심한다. 처음 느끼는 분노와 슬픔을 스스로 다스리기 위한 장치 였을지 모르지만, 작가의 초기작들을 살펴보면 엄청나게 디테일하고 노동집약적인 세밀화들이 대부분을 이루고 있다. 이후 작가는 꾸준히 수집해 낸 삶의 조각들을 통해 자신만의 작품 세계를 기록하고 있다.

데뷔전인 뉴욕의 Moonlight Kingdom 전 에서는 나만의 유토피아를 찾아 나선 방랑자의 기록을 담아냈다면, 금번 Broke Boys 전에서는 도착점이 어딘지 모르는 말들처럼, 녹아내릴 것을 알면서도 떠날 수 없는 눈사람 같은 조금은 상처입고 방황하는 이들의 순간을 그려내고 있다.

그가 기록한 장면들은 관객에게 의아한 질문들을 던진다. 공격자와 수비자가 뒤섞인 혼란스러운 장면들과 일그러진 형상의 말들은 제대로 달릴 수 없다. 우리는 그저 자연으로 돌아가기전 잠시 삶이라는 순간을 누리는 것뿐, 움직이지 않으면 어떤일도 일어나지 않을 것이다.

97년생인 작가에게 여전히 겪지 못한 수많은 순간들이 남아있고, 어떠한 인생을 살아가게 될지 그 누구도 알 수는 없지만, 순수함을 간직하고자 했던 마음을 가진 누군가와 이 사회의 톱니가 되어 함께 앞으로 나아가고자 함은 분명한 듯 하다.


In 2015, when gunshots and rages devoured the streets of Paris, the boy had to fight against fear and loathing that sank its fangs into his soul. In order to capture and record the chunk of emotions, he becomes a painter. To grip on sanity, most of his early works were extremely detailed and labor-intensive paintings. The art world of Ashin Kim has been woven together from the pieces of life that make up his life.

With 'Broke Boys,' Ashin Kim brings light to the lost with scratches on their bodies. This is in contrast to his maiden exhibition Moonlight Kingdom, which depicted a wanderer dreaming of his own utopia. Untamed horses tied to nowhere and a snowman slowly getting softer in solitude reflect different people drifting along in the moment.

Ashin's canvas features a brutal chaos of furiousness and fragility, and a pair of fractured horses that pose questions to the viewer. A moment of life is all we have before returning to nature. If we do not move, nothing will happen and we will end up in the same place as we began.

There is still much time left for the artist born in 1997. No one knows what kind of life he will lead. The artist, however, hopes to rise together with someone who shares his innocence and wishes to keep it.
