Falling in love with the charm of pixel art, Joo Jaebum has been working as a pixel artist for 10 years, expanding his boundaries with various projects. Pixel art refers to a graphic method of expressing an image based on pixels, which are the smallest units constituting an image in the form of a bitmap. Since 2014, various group exhibitions have been held in multiple countries such as Korea, Japan, India, Spain and Russia. He was also actively engaged in creative activities such as solo exhibitions at Lotte Avenuel Art Hall in 2019, exhibitions at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Cheongju, and public art projects.

The artist talks about the message of 'communication' through a subject that can elicit people's sympathy. Using 'pixels', he reversely connects the dots in between the reality and the graphic by revealing the digital world. Everything that encompasses reality, such as objects, places, people, and art, is born into an original world through the hands of the artist. The large pixel reminds us of past memories and serves as a link between the past and the present.

주재범 작가는 대학에서 애니메이션을 전공하고 관련 회사에서 일하던 중, 자신의 프로필을 색다르게 표현하고자 시작한 픽셀 아트의 매력에 빠져 현재까지 픽셀 아티스트로 활동하고 있다. 픽셀 아트는 비트맵 형식의 이미지를 이루는 가장 작은 단위인 픽셀을 기반으로 이미지를 표현하는 그래픽 방식을 말한다. 픽셀 아트를 활용한 유니크한 기획으로 인스타그램, 구글, 넥슨, 스타벅스, 디올, 나이키 등의 브랜드를 비롯하여 국내외 아티스트들과 다양한 작업을 하고 있다. 2014년부터 국내 및 해외(일본, 인도, 스페인, 러시아 등)에서 다양한 그룹 전시를 진행하였으며, 2019년 롯데갤러리에서의 개인전, 그리고 국립현대미술관 청주관의 전시, 서울시 공공 미술 프로젝트에 참여하는 등 왕성한 창작 활동을 하고 있다.

작가는 사람들의 공감을 끌어낼 수 있는 소재를 통해 ‘소통’이라는 메시지를 말하는 것처럼 보인다. '픽셀'을 사용하여 우리가 사는 디지털 세상을 역으로 드러내며 오히려 현실과 그래픽의 접점을 만든다. 사물, 장소, 사람, 예술 등 현실을 아우르는 모든 것이 작가의 손을 거쳐 독창적인 세상으로 탄생하게 된다. 큼지막한 픽셀은 과거의 추억을 떠올리게 하는 동시에 과거와 현재를 이어주는 연결고리 역할을 하고 있다.
